No disease should drive a family to burn one of their own alive.
But that’s what happened to Munia.
The first signs of leprosy appear when Munia is just a girl. Her feet are numb and cracked. Nobody can explain why. Instead of offering care and support, her family is afraid. They believe Munia is cursed. Her mother is the only one who loves and protects her.
Tragically, her mother dies. Her uncles and cousins try several times to kill her. Until…
They throw petrol over her and set her on fire.
Munia manages to put out the flames… then the other villagers drive her out from the community with knives, sticks and bits of bamboo.
The physical pain of such an atrocity is one thing. But imagine the heartache of being so rejected and despised… while still grieving over the death of your mother.
Now homeless and vulnerable, Munia wanders the streets. She’s frightened, grieving and alone. She sleeps at a train station, the only shelter she can find. Eventually, a kind man sees her and recognises the signs of leprosy and tells her to go to a Leprosy Mission Hospital.
At The Leprosy Mission hospital, Munia is welcomed with open arms. The nurses clean and bandage her ulcers. The staff talk and spend time with her because she has no one else.
She is given Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) to treat her leprosy.
Munia is one of the fortunate ones. She could have lost her life in secret, without anyone knowing. She might not have managed to run away from her uncle … if she had not come to The Leprosy Mission, she could have developed septicaemia and died.
When you give today, you help people like Munia affected by leprosy to receive treatment and healing… you may even save lives!
