Leprosy is curable.
No child or adult should be excluded from family, community, school or workplace due to the disease. Your monthly support helps change attitudes and fight discriminatory laws that exclude leprosy-affected people from society.
If leprosy is treated early enough, nobody should suffer disability from the disease. You will ensure those with leprosy will not suffer from nerve damage, loss of hands and feet, and loss of independence due to leprosy.
The Leprosy Mission Timor Leste has been fighting the spread of leprosy in the country for more than 20 years. We are committed to eliminating leprosy by 2035.
In Timor Leste, leprosy is not given priority by the Ministry of Health. This has resulted in limited funding, poor coordination and case management of leprosy. Additionally, health professionals are limited in detecting and managing leprosy cases. There is a lack of awareness and knowledge regarding leprosy at national, sub-national, community and all levels of health providers.
There has been an increase in disabilities as a result of leprosy and increase in the number of children detected among new cases. People with disabilities (from leprosy) living in communities also have a limited understanding of how to prevent disabilities.
