SPROUTS
Working in 4 local communities endemic to leprosy in Nawalparasi and Nawalpur, Western Nepal, the project targets the triple zero using several different methods:
- Self-Help Groups: Persons impacted by leprosy, lymphatic filariasis and other disabilities are invited to join self-help groups that teach them business skills and health improvement knowledge. These groups will be supported to develop into business companies where they learn to independently manage the small group business including how to establish raw material suppliers to marketing strategies.
- School education: Working in schools to increase menstrual hygiene practices and awareness will improve the general health of students. The project will support students to understand how to manage and ensure cleanliness is maintained during menstruation. Targeted leprosy awareness through different mediums will also be used in schools to assess which types of presented information is the most memorable for students.
- Building capacity of local health workers: Core to increasing leprosy diagnosis, treatment and management, is the upskilling of health workers. The project will upskill workers and partner with them in leprosy active case finding activities.
The Strengthening Pathways for Economic Resilience through Sustainable Opportunities to Communities Project in Nepal project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP). Thanks to you and ANCP, these projects can help improve the well-being of people affected by leprosy and disability in Nepal.
