Maria works hard to support herself by chopping firewood and growing veggies.

But leprosy has damaged the nerves in her hands and feet – which means using an axe is extremely dangerous.

And her garden is no safer. If she steps on something sharp she can't feel the wound, so it can easily become infected.

In a country like Timor-Leste, no work means no food.

Maria needs her hands and feet or she will starve!

As if this weren't heart-breaking enough, Maria has been shunned by everyone around her. The only person she has in the world is her brother, who also has leprosy.
