Kalla’s parents are very poor. They live in a slum.
When Kalla first showed up at The Leprosy Mission Hospital, his bones were almost visible through his skin. It’s very likely his immune system was struggling with poor nutrition, dirty water and overcrowded living spaces.
These conditions make children like Kalla more susceptible to developing leprosy.
Kalla deals with the devastating effects of leprosy each day. He has trouble feeding and dressing himself because of his clawed hands.
If nothing is done, Kalla could lose his hands altogether.
Why? Because of a clawed hand from leprosy. Without the use of his hand and arm, he can’t ride his bike to school. Even if he does go, he can’t use a pen.
And when he does go to school, his classmates tease him about the way he would eat his food. Mock him because he could no longer write properly.
“Because of my clawed hand, I cannot write my exam with a pen. I feel bad that my friends will be going up to the next class while I will be detained,” says Kalla.
What a terrible tragedy it is that this bright, young boy—who desperately wants to learn—may have to stop his education. And give up his dream of becoming an engineer.
All because of a disease that can be cured!
