Heizen’s story is not unlike that of many other children in Papua New Guinea.
Heizen lives in a poverty-stricken area with his mum. He used to go to school, enjoyed learning and especially playing touch rugby with his friends.
But his world fell apart when he was diagnosed with leprosy at just 10 years of age.
His left hand soon began to claw, and his elbow grew numb. He found it hard to perform even simple tasks.
To make matters worse, Heizen’s friends teased him, and he felt too ashamed to go to school any more. He hasn’t been to school in the past 12 months.
Heizen wants to write again. He wants to play sport again. But most of all he just wants to help his mum.
Without a cure and ongoing care, Heizen’s hand will continue to claw. He’ll never be able to do even simple tasks… for himself or his hardworking mum.
The situation is urgent. Leprosy in PNG is on the rise. One third of all new cases diagnosed are young children – some are as young as five. These children need hope and healing.
You will be offering hope for generations to come – to cure, care and restore the lives of people living under the shadow of leprosy.
