You may remember Nelson, your Community-Based Rehabilitation Project Coordinator in Timor Leste. He was going to visit Australia last year – but he didn’t make it! The day of his flight he was involved in a motorcycle accident and severely damaged his leg! This was distressing enough in itself, but for Nelson, the recovery had an extra degree of difficulty. He already wears a caliper on his other leg.

‘Cursed’ and left alone to die…

Some people still believe that leprosy is a curse. When Castro, a Leprosy Mission worker, found Alfredu, he had been left alone to die in a shack with pigs. His family were so terrified they wanted nothing to do with him. Castro was horrified when he saw Alfredu's condition. He wrote this letter to let Australians know about the reality of leprosy for some people in Timor Leste.
