News - 14/10/2010 - Novartis to continue free provision of MDT

At a ceremony on 11 October 2010 at the headquarters of the World Health Organization in Geneva, Novartis committed to supplying multidrug therapy (MDT) free of charge to all persons affected by leprosy for another five years.

Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization, Joseph Jimenez, the Chief Executive of Novartis and Klaus Leisinger of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development signed a Memorandum of Understanding that Novartis will continue to provide free MDT to every country around the world. This new Memorandum of Understanding will come into effect from January 2011 and be valid through to December 2015, the period of the new Enhanced Global Strategy for Further Reducing the Disease Burden Due to Leprosy (Plan Period 2011 – 2015). Novartis has been donating MDT in this way since the year 2000.
