Self care groups operate in many places and may also form the basis of loans and savings groups.
These are groups of leprosy affected people, often with various types of disability, who meet together on a regular basis to encourage and support each other, talk about their situation, and to provide peer pressure regarding prevention of disability.
They check each other’s hands and feet for ulcers, and if they remain ulcer-free - everyone cheers. If an ulcer has formed, they have to answer to the group as to why. Sad stories abound, but with support from friends in a Self Care Group, life can become more bearable.
