One of TLM’s innovative programs in India is the "Children's Education program, which provides financial assistance to educate leprosy affected clients and their children. Under this scheme, many children have been able to continue with their education and undertake vocational studies leading to a future career. Without this assistance, none of these children would have been able to complete their education.
TLM Social workers work together with village leaders, teachers and Headmasters to identify eligible children in need of assistance with their schooling. Particular attention is focused on children who have discontinued their schooling due to financial constraints.
In addition, staff regularly go into local villages and schools to conduct leprosy surveys. Children and students who are detected with leprosy are subsequently followed up to assess eligibility for the Education program.
Some students are doing extremely well and have won scholarships or gained entry into professional Bachelors and Masters Degree courses. For most, there is a lot of hard work required since they come from a background of poverty and disadvantage, where their parents did not have the advantages of a good education and a secure career.
Unfortunately for some students, as in all walks of life, the commitment is too hard to maintain and they drop out along the way and resort to casual employment.
